Understanding Depression: Proper Care and Guidance

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems today and is continuously increasing. Many people are showing more interest in mental health, which is a positive development. However, misconceptions about depression still persist in society, both in terms of stigmatizing patients and, on the other hand, using the word "depression" in contexts that may not align with its true medical meaning.

Therefore, it is essential for society to have correct knowledge about depression to foster true understanding for patients, families, and society as a whole. Depression is not just temporary sadness or discouragement; it is a medical condition related to changes in the function of neurotransmitters in the brain. It affects emotions, thoughts, behavior, and physical bodily functions. Patients may experience sadness, gloominess, boredom, feelings of emptiness, or a loss of interest in things they once enjoyed. These symptoms typically persist for at least two weeks and interfere with daily life, such as work, studies, or relationships with others. Importantly, depression is not a mental weakness and cannot be cured by positive thinking alone; patients require appropriate professional care.

Symptoms of depression may vary from person to person, but common signs include feeling sad, depressed, or empty most of the time; boredom or loss of interest in activities once enjoyed; getting tired easily or having no energy even without physical exertion; insomnia, difficulty sleeping, or oversleeping; loss of appetite or overeating; decreased concentration, slow thinking, or difficulty making decisions; feeling worthless or blaming oneself. Some may have thoughts of self-harm or not wanting to live. If these symptoms persist and begin to affect your life, you must seek advice from a doctor or psychiatrist immediately.

A key point to understand is that depression cannot be self-diagnosed. Feeling stressed, tired, burnt out, or sad at certain times in life does not always mean you have depression. Many symptoms can result from other factors such as accumulated stress, lack of sleep, family problems, overwork, or certain physical illnesses that mimic depressive symptoms. A diagnosis of depression requires an evaluation by a doctor or psychiatrist, considering symptoms, duration, severity, and the impact on daily life. Therefore, concluding on your own that you have depression may lead to misunderstandings and prevent you from receiving the proper care and treatment.

Depression is a condition that requires understanding and empathy from society. However, claiming to have depression without a medical diagnosis is incorrect. The term "depression" must be used carefully and in accordance with medical evaluation to prevent confusion in society and to avoid affecting those who truly suffer from the disease, who might be viewed as making excuses or not trying to care for themselves. Meanwhile, those diagnosed by a doctor may need temporary adjustments to their study or work patterns during certain periods. This should follow the advice of doctors and psychiatrists to maintain a balance between treatment and daily living.

The good news is that depression is a treatable disease. Many patients can return to a normal life when they receive appropriate care. Treatment may consist of several combined methods, including counseling, behavioral and lifestyle adjustments, and medication if deemed appropriate by a doctor. The treatment plan depends on the severity of the symptoms and the individual patient's condition. Antidepressants do not cure the disease immediately like antibiotics but play a vital role in balancing brain chemicals, improving symptoms, reducing mental distress, and helping patients live normally. Some patients may take medication for only a period of their lives and then stop under medical supervision, while others may require long-term treatment depending on the nature of the disease and individual factors.

Antidepressants are not classified as narcotics and do not cause medical addiction. However, they must be taken continuously according to the doctor's instructions, and you must not stop the medication on your own. Arbitrarily stopping medication is a major cause of relapse. For those diagnosed with depression, understanding the nature of the disease and participating in treatment is extremely important. Taking medication regularly, following up on appointments, and communicating with the doctor when unusual symptoms occur will make the treatment more effective and reduce the chance of long-term relapse.

Depression is not something you have to face alone. Seeking help when necessary and maintaining consistent self-care are part of the recovery process. We emphasize that this disease is medically common but treatable when given proper care. Therefore, correct understanding of the disease is vital for patients, families, and society. Not stigmatizing patients and avoiding inappropriate language will help create a society that understands and provides appropriate assistance. When evaluated and treated continuously, combined with proper self-care, many patients can return to living a high-quality life once again.
