Herbal Inhalers: Must Be Safe from Pathogens

Herbal inhalers have long been a companion for Thais, offering freshness, relief from dizziness, and relaxation. Some even use them to combat drowsiness and stress. However, behind those pleasant scents lies a crucial question we often overlook: "Are they truly safe?" Even though herbal inhalers are natural products, if the manufacturing process is unclean or substandard, these seemingly ordinary inhalers can become unwitting carriers of pathogens into our bodies.

Recently, there have been reports of microorganisms—including bacteria, yeast, and mold—detected in certain herbal inhaler products. These herbs often originate from soil or the environment. Without proper cleaning, decontamination, and good manufacturing processes, there is a risk of contamination exceeding the safety standards set for these products. In fact, this is not limited to inhalants; oral herbal medicines can also contain excessive levels of these pathogens if quality control and production processes are poor. When these contaminants are inhaled, they pose risks to the respiratory system and lungs, especially in immunocompromised individuals such as the elderly, patients with chronic diseases, or those on immunosuppressants. For oral herbal medicines, these pathogens can cause gastrointestinal infections or produce toxins leading to illness, allergies, and inflammation.

Medicinal and herbal products must undergo analysis for microbial contamination—including bacteria, mold, and specific strains—to ensure they do not exceed the standard limits set for consumer safety.

As mentioned, herbs come from nature, so finding microorganisms in raw materials is not unusual. However, the crucial step is to reduce the microbial load to a minimum before using them to manufacture medicines and products. The initial steps involve washing, drying, and controlling moisture to prevent mold growth. In the manufacturing stage, factories must adhere to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) as required by law, prioritizing the cleanliness of equipment, raw materials, and personnel. In some cases, gamma irradiation, electron beam (E-beam), or X-ray sterilization is necessary to kill or reduce pathogens in raw materials or herbal products without destroying their active compounds. While highly effective, this process is costly, and few facilities in the country offer this service. This presents a major challenge for manufacturers, especially small entrepreneurs who have good intentions but lack resources.

Having been immersed in the field of herbal quality for ten years, the authors see the overview of challenges from the perspectives of entrepreneurs, legal frameworks, consumer protection, and quality assurance systems. Many herbs in Thailand are valuable plants both medicinally and culturally. However, they also represent a "challenge" that requires knowledge, understanding, and government support to securely propel this precious wisdom to an industrial level.

In the Thai herbal industry, there are diverse groups of entrepreneurs. The first group consists of those who are ready, knowledgeable, and determined to produce to standard. The second group includes those who want to do well but are not yet ready, possibly lacking knowledge or resources. The final group focuses solely on sales without regard for quality or safety, prioritizing profit over consumers, creating a negative image for the herbal industry as a whole. In reality, Thai herbs have high potential if supported correctly. Access to production knowledge, quality inspection, and certification systems will be key to elevating Thai herbal products.

Regarding microbial contamination in herbal products, beyond the Ministry of Public Health, many other government sectors play a vital role in creating support systems. Specifically, infrastructure for irradiation centers to kill or reduce pathogens in raw materials or products is needed so entrepreneurs can access adequate services. Furthermore, policies are needed to support small entrepreneurs in accessing irradiation at costs that allow herbal businesses to survive. Ten years have passed; perhaps this year the state will recognize the critical issues in the Thai herbal business and truly take action.

Thai herbs are not merely a heritage of wisdom to be proud of, but also a "Soft Power" capable of creating economic value and a sustainable image for the country. Quality issues are significant if we want Thai herbs to enter the global market. If we collaborate to care for quality from upstream to downstream—from planting, harvesting, and processing to quality control of the finished product—Thai herbs will not only be "fragrant and refreshing" but also "safe, reliable, and valuable," fulfilling the intentions of entrepreneurs and Thai people who wish to see Thai herbs go far globally.
