World AIDS Day

Chula Pharmacy: Understanding and Preventing HIV on World AIDS Day
Since 1988, December 1 has been globally recognized as World AIDS Day by the World Health Organization. Although society now understands that AIDS is not easily transmitted and individuals with HIV can coexist without discrimination, the fight against this disease continues.
Regrettably, in 2022, there were still approximately 9,200 new cases of HIV infection, with about half affecting teenagers aged 15-24 due to unsafe sex practices.
Distinguishing between AIDS and HIV infection is crucial. AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes) occurs when the immune system is compromised by the HIV virus, leading to susceptibility to various diseases. Antiretroviral drugs have significantly improved HIV treatment, preventing its progression to AIDS when taken consistently.
Nonetheless, patient cooperation is vital. Neglecting medication or inconsistent adherence raises the risk of drug-resistant bacteria and treatment failure. Consistent medication is imperative to suppress the virus, preventing immune deficiency and opportunistic infections.
The road to living with HIV is challenging. Continuous medication is essential, and despite advancements in drug development, adverse reactions persist. Prevention remains the most effective strategy. Safe sex practices, condom use, and knowing your partner's HIV status reduce infection risks. Avoiding risky behaviors like sharing syringes is crucial for saving lives.
For those at risk, post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) within 72 hours of exposure is available. Additionally, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is an option for individuals in high-risk situations, requiring consultation with a doctor.
While new AIDS treatments are evolving, a complete cure remains elusive. Lifelong medication is necessary, emphasizing the importance of preventive measures. Chula Pharmacy, represented by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Natthada Areepiam and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Bodin Tiwasuwan from the Faculty of Pharmacy at Chulalongkorn University, stands at the forefront of education and awareness on this World AIDS Day.
