Delving into Diarrhea and Summer Health Woes (Part 2)

Discover the insights into medicine with Chula Pharmacy: Delving into Diarrhea and Summer Health Woes (Part 2)
Last week, we delved into the common summer woe of diarrhea, discussing a few commonly used medications like powdered sugar and mineral salts (ORS) to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. These medications can effectively halt bowel movements, but it's advised to use them only when necessary due to their potential to slow down pathogen elimination, possibly leading to constipation. Additionally, charcoal carbon medications are employed to absorb toxins, although caution is needed when taking them alongside other medications as they may interfere with absorption.
For those who have dealt with diarrhea, there might be queries about alternative medications beyond those mentioned earlier. These could include toxin-absorbing drugs other than charcoal powder or medications aimed at rebalancing intestinal microorganisms, as well as remedies for accompanying symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
Starting with toxin-absorbing drugs, Dioctahedral Smecite, available in powder or liquid form, is a popular choice in Thailand. It's believed to absorb toxins or microorganisms, potentially influencing intestinal secretions and reducing inflammation. Safe for children aged 2 and up, it's not without its cautions, including possible adverse reactions like itching or constipation.
Another category is medications to restore intestinal microbial balance. Saccharomyces Boulardii, a probiotic, aids in rebalancing and bolstering the immune system. It's used to treat acute diarrhea, prevent inflammatory bowel disease, and counteract diarrhea resulting from prolonged antibiotic use. Available in powder or capsule form, it may cause side effects like bloating or fever.
Medications to alleviate abdominal pain and spasms focus on relaxing smooth muscles in the stomach and intestines. Common choices include Hysocine Butylbromide and Mebeverine, with potential side effects like constipation or dry mouth.
Lastly, for nausea and vomiting, Domperidone is frequently used. Available in tablet or liquid form, it's crucial to be aware of potential interactions with other medications, as it can lead to serious complications, particularly in patients with certain heart conditions or those taking specific drugs like antibiotics or psychiatric medications.
In conclusion, while various medications can aid in managing diarrhea and its symptoms, it's essential to prioritize rehydration with powdered sugar and mineral salts initially. Should the need arise for additional medications, consulting a healthcare professional or pharmacist is always advisable to ensure safety and efficacy.
