Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chulalongkorn University is Thailand’s first faculty of pharmaceutical sciences/ pharmacy school

The faculty was founded by Prince Rangsit Prayurasakdi on December 8, 1913 in the reign of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). This date has become an officially established date for the school and also for the pharmaceutical profession in Thailand. From a department of Doctor for Compounding in the Royal Medical College, commonly called "Rong Rean Prung Ya" to Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Chulalongkorn University.

The Royal Medical School was merged into Chulalongkorn University as the Faculty of Medicine of Chulalongkorn University

December 8, 1913

The merger between the Royal Medical School and Chulalongkorn University resulted in the establishment of the esteemed Faculty of Medicine of Chulalongkorn University. This merger was a significant milestone for the university, as it integrated the apothecary school or apothecary department of the Royal Medical School, located within the premises of Siriraj Hospital (now known as Siriraj Hospital), into Chulalongkorn University.
On March 26, 1916, King Rama VI (Rama VI) bestowed the title of Chulalongkorn University upon the Civil Service School of King Chulalongkorn. Subsequently, on April 6, 1917, it was officially announced that the Royal Medical School would be affiliated with Chulalongkorn University, operating as the Faculty of Medicine of Chulalongkorn University. As a result of this transition, the School of Medicine's association shifted from the Royal Medical School to the Department of Medicine within the esteemed Faculty of Medicine at Chulalongkorn University.

In 1932, the Ministry of Education's Dictionary, with the valuable input from pharmacist Capt. Waan Lohpij, made a significant linguistic amendment by replacing the term "preparative medicine" with "pharmaceutical." This transformation prompted the apothecary school to officially adopt the new nomenclature, leading to its name change on March 7, 1934, to the Department or School of Pharmacy. Subsequently, in accordance with the prevailing University Act, the department or school of pharmacy underwent further development and attained the status of an independent department known as the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences within Chulalongkorn University.

His Excellency, Pharmacist Dr. Tua, Lapanukrom

May 19, 1939

In a historic development on May 19, 1939, Chulalongkorn University issued a momentous order to His Excellency Pharmacist Dr. Tua lapanukrom, who concurrently served as the Director-General of the Department of Science and Minister during that period. Adding to his already distinguished roles, Dr. Tualapanukrom assumed the esteemed position of an autonomous head of the pharmaceutical department. This decision paved the way for the comprehensive provision of pharmacy education within the institution.
To support this endeavor, the inaugural academic building of the independent department of pharmacy was meticulously constructed. On June 24, 1939, a noteworthy inauguration ceremony took place, marking the official opening of this prominent academic facility. Presently recognized as the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts building, it stands as a testament to the early foundations of the department and its subsequent evolution within Chulalongkorn University.

Faculty of Pharmacy, Chulalongkorn University

April 13, 1972

In a significant development, on February 2, 1945, the University of Medicine was established, heralding a transformative phase for Chulalongkorn University. This pivotal move entailed the separation of various academic entities, including the Faculty of Medicine (Siriraj), the Independent Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Independent Department of Dentistry, and the independent department of veterinary medicine. Consequently, Chulalongkorn University assumed the designations of the Faculty of Medicine, Siriraj Hospital, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Dentistry, and the Faculty of Veterinary Science within the newly formed University of Medicine.

Fast forward to February 21, 1969, a royal command was issued, bestowing the name "Mahidol University" upon the University of Medicine. As a result, the Faculty of Pharmacy within the university underwent a name change, becoming the "Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University." This nomenclature persisted until April 13, 1972, when the Revolutionary Council Order came into effect. According to this directive, the Faculty of Pharmacy, Mahidol University, previously situated in Chulalongkorn University, was relocated to its current location within Chulalongkorn University itself. Thus, the faculty was appropriately renamed as the "Faculty of Pharmacy, Chulalongkorn University," as it stands today.

At Present,

Since its inception in 1957, the 5-year Bachelor of Pharmacy program has undergone significant revisions to align with contemporary education and modern scientific advancements. Notably, in 1966, the program transitioned from a single department structure to ten specialized departments, enabling a more comprehensive curriculum. Recognizing the evolving role of pharmacists in patient care, the introduction of hospital pharmacy as a subject marked a significant milestone in expanding the program's scope.

The pursuit of educational excellence remains an ongoing endeavor. The Faculty of Pharmacy at Chulalongkorn University currently implements the revised Bachelor of Pharmacy curriculum, which was introduced in 2009. This curriculum offers two distinct branches: the Bachelor of Pharmacy program focused on pharmacy, and the Bachelor of Pharmacy program specializing in pharmaceutical care. With a study duration of six years, students engage in a comprehensive learning experience.

Situated in the vibrant Siam Square area, the Faculty of Pharmacy boasts a collection of diverse buildings. Among them, the Faculty of Pharmacy Building holds historical significance as the first structure constructed after the relocation to Siam Square. Additionally, the Pharmacy Building, erected in August 1993, stands as a testament to 80 years of pharmacy education. Another noteworthy addition is the Laboratory Animal Building, inaugurated on June 25, 2009, further enhancing the faculty's research capabilities.
